With the atmosphere you get round the little squares and streets shopping in Palma couldn't be more fun and enjoyable. There is a very relaxed shopping atmosphere around Palma, Mallorca / Majorca. In Palma you will also find a the usual electrical goods, Jewellery shops and of course plenty of the usual tourist merchandise shops. In Palma you will find everything from top designer shops to small boutiques to your general basic clothes, in the main shopping areas such as Avinguda Jaume III and the Passeig des Born which are perfect for up-market boutiques and the pedestrian streets around Placa Major for small specialist shops. There is also a modern shopping mall and hypermarket complex, the Centro Comercial Porto Pi, that is 2km from the centre. Palma has a great advantage for the shopper as it is relatively a small size. Avinguda Jaume III, as well as being the best-known street in the city, is also the newest. Only 30 years ago the street didn't exist and today it is one of Palma's most elegant avenues, which is hard to believe as it is lined with sophisticated shops offering men's and women's fashions as well as jewellery and gifts. Galerias Preciados, one of Spain's most popular department store chains, is also present. For a thorough shopping spree you shouldn't forget the side streets of Bonaire, Sta. Maria del Sepulcro, Sant Marty etc. Most shops are open from around 10am to 1:30pm and 5pm to 8pm Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings. The exceptions are souvenir shops in the large resorts, which stay open every day, El Corte Ingles (leading department store in Spain), Pryca, and the Gigante chain of supermarkets, open throughout the day Monday to Saturday. If you, like me like the markets for a good haggle and great bargain there are plenty across the island of Mallorca....Make sure you try to barter as it makes that bargain even more satisfying!!! During the summer months it is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to about 2pm, and during the winter on Fridays and Saturdays. Certainly during the summer months there is always a friendly atmosphere as it attracts a number of buskers and other street entertainers, whilst others just prefer to sit and watch the world go by from the open-air cafes. The Mercat Olivar is Palma's main produce market, and is held Monday to Saturday 7am to 2pm in a hall in the Plaza Olivar, near to the Placa d'Espanya.
