Pamplona Pamplona is most famous for its San Fermin festival (or fiesta) which takes place during the month of July (6th-14th). The most notable aspect of this celebration is the running of the bulls, which takes place through the streets of the city's oldest quarter. Members of the public take part in these morning events (including many foreigners), coming to test their bravery against the six large bulls that are to fight in the afternoon's bullfight, & later in the day the two herds of tame bulls. Aside from bull-running & bull fights the San Fermin festival is not to be missed as the city comes alive day & night for it's duration. There is something for everyone with children's activities during the daytime, a mix of events in the late afternoon/evening, & partying throughout the night. The old town of Pamplona is worth a mention due to its retention of medieval character & layout. It is also coincidentally listed as having one of the best living standards in Spain. Geography & Facts Pamplona is the capital of Navarra in the North of Spain. It currently (2006) has a population of just over 170,000 people. Getting around The best way to experience Pamplona is on foot. The old & new centres of the city as well as it's main sights & attractions are within easy walking distance of each other. A good place to start may be the Plaza de Castillo. Otherwise bus services are in operation for the shorter journeys, & trains for those looking to cover more distance. Cuisine The typical cuisine of Pamplona includes many roast specialities, these include suckling pig, lamb, goat, & other types of meat. However more pork is consumed here than other meats. Shopping Although perhaps not the best in Spain Pamplona does offer an ample selection of all kinds of shops. These include high street fashion outlets, departments stores, markets, & craft shops. Climate During the summer months (June-September) the climate in Pamplona is very warm, so much so that daily highs can easily reach 35°C. However it's winters can be very cold, often dipping well below freezing point, especially at night.
