Park de la Ciutadella The Park de la Ciutadella is Barcelona's most central park. Within its gates are Barcelona's Zoo, a boating lake, several museums, & the building that houses the Catalan Parliment. The park is a beautiful spot in the city, an excellent place to visit for the day, or just as a lunchtime break from a days sightseeing. In the year 1714 as part of the war of Spanish Succession the city of Barcelona fell to the army of Phillip V. To punish & keep control of the Catalan capital the then largest fortress in Europe was built (the Ciutadella), destroying a large portion of the city centre to make way for it. This became a much hated symbol of central government for the inhabitants of the previously autonomous Barcelona, & was eventually demoloshed 1869 & 1878. Only three structures remain, the chapel, the governors palace, & the arsenal (now home to the Catalan Parliment). It was decided that the former site of the Ciutadella be transformed into a park for the people of Barcelona. It took over 15 years to construct the 74 acre park, its buildings, & monuments. The park's centrepeice must be the beautiful Cascada, a baroque triumphal arch with waterfall & fountain. It's design was based loosely on the La Trevi fountain in Rome. The architect who designed it (Josep Fontsere) was assisted by the young Antoni Gaudi; though at this time a student.
