Park Guell Park Guell is Barcelona's most unique park, & is spread over some 20 hectares of its inner city. The project was commissioned by Eusebi Guell with the idea in mind that he wanted to construct a garden city for the rich of Barcelona, like that of central London. It was to combine open parkland, gardens, houses, & public institutions; but the project was never completed. Soon after Eusebi Guell's death the park was handed over for city use (1923). The park combines a number of architectural styles, with notable features including the Sala de las Cien Columnas (Hall of the Hundred Columns), Greek theatre, & Can Muntaner house (Gaudi's former residence & now a museum & school). Large viaducts were built to carry cars & pedestrians so as not to ruin the natural contours of the land. This together with the fact that much of the tile used in the parks mosaics was recycled from industrial ceramic waste means that Guell Park is a good example of an environmentally friendly development. As mentioned earlier Antoni Guell moved to the Can Muntaner property in the centre of the park & lived there until his death. When work on the park was halted it became his private garden. In 1969 it was declared a national monumnet, & has since been used as both a school & as a museum dedicated to Gaudi.
