Passeig de Gracia There was once an old farmhouse located just outside Barcelona called Gracia, & the path that led from it to Barcelona came to be known as the Passeig de Gracia. As time went on the farmhouse became a town (of the same name) & Barcelona grew well beyond its borders, eventually engulfing Gracia in 1897 & transforming it into a Barri (district or quarter) of the Catalan capital. As a city street the Passeig de Gracia gaine more significance, & in the 18th century it's lower part was transformed into an avenue bordered with trees & fountains. The 19th century saw the street fully urbanised & made five lanes wide, soon becoming the most fashionable place in Barcelona, & home to a variety of theatres, ballrooms, concert halls, & cafes. Today it remains a delightful part of the city; five kilometres in length & with much of its heritage intact. A multitude of urban palaces, & modernist buildings still remain, alongside the numerous shopping & dining options. This is also one of the most sought after places to stay in the city, & there are an excellent collection of (mostly) high end hotels on offer.
