Peniscola Castle The castle in Peniscola was constructed to roughly its present form by the Knights Templar on the ruins of a Moorish citadel. It is perched on the town's highest point, a striking location almost entirely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and the part of Peniscola which is home to its oldest quarter. The castle is a very solid construct with heavy stonework and fortification. However the 13th century saw renovation and refinement of the building as it was transformed into a Papal palace. This marked the arrival of the last Pope of Avignon (an antipope) Pope Benedict XIII or Pedro de Luna, who fled to Peniscola after the loss of support at Avignon. Peniscola Castle is also known as the Castle of Papa Luna after him, and his private and official rooms form a major part of the castle tour.
