Pineda Pineda de Mar is a small town located on the shores of the Costa Maresme (part of Barcelona's municipality), even though it is often more readily associated with the coastal resorts of the Costa Brava. The town is at the gateway to the Montnegre National Park, which means it is partially surrounded by a lush forested area. Its well kept beaches measure over three kilometres, are made up of course golden sand, & have been awarded the European blue flag. Additionally the mountainous region near Pineda is favoured amongst those who travel to the area to participate in adventure sports; this can vary from hiking & mountain biking, to rock climbing & (a little farther North) skiing. Pineda de Mar is within easy driving distance of both Girona & Barcelona airports, placing it in an ideal spot from which to capitalize on the tourist trade. This meant large population increases during the summer months, & so a multitude of hotel & apartment complexes were built along the town's front to house the visitors. Tourists need entertaining & to cope with the influx numerous cafes, restaurants, & bars have opened up alongside modern retail outlets. In recent years residential tourism has also had an impact, with city dwelling Spaniards & residents of other European nations buying second homes in the area to use as holiday homes, or as an investment. Pineda has seen many changes over the years, though it has still managed to retain much of its identity & tradition. Town life still tends to revolve around three main squares, markets & homegrown shops are still plentiful, & the pace of life remains relaxed. Another good example of this can be seen in Pineda's various fiestas (or festivals). The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere. The climate in Pineda is (in the main) welcoming all year round. With average highs of 31°C during the summer months & 16°C in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However be aware during the winter low temperatures can be a good deal cooler than in Spain's southern regions.
