Playa Blanca Shopping Playa Blanca in the south of Lanzarote has, along with the other Canary Islands has managed to keep their status of lower import tax and VAT rates - duty free, so if you are looking to buy tobacco, wines, spirits, perfumes and maybe some electrical goods, look no further as they are much cheaper here than in other EU countries! But please remember unlike other European Union Countries, there is a strict limit to the amount that you are allowed to export out of Lanzarote into the UK and other EU countries! The Limits are: 1 litre of spirits, 2 litres of wine and 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars. There are good supermarkets in Playa Blanca that sell all the well-known brands. Although the choice is not as good as in Puerto del Carmen, there are a fair number of electrical duty-free stores and other shops geared at tourists near the harbour. It is possible to get good bargains in the electrical duty-free stores, but shoppers should remember that they can't take purchases back to the shop once they've left the island. They should check everything works and that all batteries, cables and plugs are included; that there is a European guarantee, not an Asian one; and that all electrical items have a CE stamp. In Puerto del Carmen you will find many numerous Boutiques to be found, anything from basic summer gear, the usual holiday clothing and surf and fashion gear to a few designer shops with everything in! However the best shopping districts are in Arrecife and Deiland in Playa Honda. In Arrecife the main shopping street is Calle Leon Y Castillo - locally known as Calle Real. The Deiland Shopping Centre in Playa Honda hosts and array of Shops and relaxing cafes as well as a Cinema. A Trip here will cost about 20 each way. If you, like me like the markets for a good haggle and great bargain there are plenty across the island of Lanzarote...Make sure you try to barter as it makes that bargain even more satisfying!!! Markets that are found in tourist areas such as Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, are normally aimed at the tourism market selling, souvenirs and gifts, but around the island you will also find markets that provide for the local inhabitants, with the local farmers and produce makers selling their trade, such as local cheese's and confectionery! The markets are always a great day out to have a wander around and look even if you aren't planning on buying anything! There is a large Market in Teguise every Sunday Morning, where you can buy many interesting craft items, T-shirts and fake Rolex watches. The busy Sunday Market in Teguise is worth the journey for the most dedicated shoppers; as well as the usual tourist tat a variety of locally produced goods are on sale, from pottery to tablecloths. It is around 25 each way by taxi.
