Port Vell Port Vell is Barcelona's oldest harbour area with lots of character & charm. However previous to the 2002 Barcelona Olympics it was an obsolete run down area with many empty warehouses, rubbish dumps, & disused railroad yards. During the preparations for the Olympics Barcelona's entire seafront was transformed, including the Port Vell area. Aside from general tidying up & landscaping, a modern port & marina was created with the best of services & facilities. A coastal road was also moved underground enabling it to be made pedestrian freindly, & joining the harbour to the end of the La Rambla boulevard & the Barceloneta neighbourhood. Finally the Maremagnum complex was added, complete with restaurants, bars, a cinema, & many shopping options. An IMAX cinema & Barcelona's aquarium were added at a later date. Today Port Vell is one of Barcelona's main attractions. Its renewal has opened the city centre to the sea, & embraces both its ancient heritage & its modern facilities. For the boating enthusiast it offers a wide range of mooring options for small to large craft, as well as a wealth of services, including the Barcelona '92 Olympic facilities yard; one of the best on the Mediterranean. For the tourist there are a host of delightful buildings, old & new flanked by a modern pleasure harbour with many luxurious boats & yaghts. The Maritime Museum is also based here, alongside other entertainment installations, dining options, & retail outlets. Barceloneta beach (awarded a blue flag) stretches away from one side of the port. Finally on the opposite side of the Columus Monument is the famous La Rambla boulevard.
