Welcome to Puerto del Rosario
Puerto del Rosario is the Capital of Fuerteventura. It has been the capital of this wonderful island since 1860. It is the oldest town of all of the Archipelago! There are even great beaches close to the town! It isn't really a tourist resort and has a population of over 18,000 - so is perfect for you to brush up on your Spanish or see some true Canarian culture and how locals live in the "city" of Fuerteventura.
Once known as Puerto del Puerto de Cabras, which means - goat harbour, the town developed into an important port during the 19th century after taking the capital of the island from La Oliva. The church in the centre of the capital is dedicated to the patron saint 'Virgin del Rosario' and it wasn't until 1956 that the town was given the more pleasant name of Puerto del Rosario, which means - port of the rosary.

The town is all located around the busy working port, where you will find ferries that go between some of the islands in the Canaries. It is also the base for the cruise liners that visit Fuerteventura. It is close by to the harbour that you find lots of alleys that are lined with white old Canarian style houses.
One place that is worth a visit in Rosario is the home of the former exile poet Miguel de Unamuno which is now a museum. The culture centre - Casa de la Cultura, which is where you will find exhibitions, plays and concerts held is also interesting place to go. Plans for a tourist quarter and a municipal park are in place.
In the south of the capital is where you will find its beach, it is a lovely beach although the sea has a strong current and excellent waves - which is good for the watersports (surfers / windsurfers etc) enthusiast's - but can be dangerous for bathers, there are warning signs for this.
The nightlife in Puerto del Rosario is very traditionally Spanish, you will find many local bars and restaurants, Tapa's bars, Steak houses, Seafood and mostly Spanish restaurants. This is where you will see that many of the inhabitants of Fuerteventura will go out to party for the evening although hardly any tourists will be found partying there. There are a few English bars and restaurants that serve purpose for Puerto del Rosario's day visiting tourists but that is all - although everyone is very welcoming and great fun to party alongside!! Get practising your salsa'ing for when you go out for the evening there!! The bars and restaurants can be found dotted around the centre of the capital and along near the port too, but as this isn't a tourist resort there are no commercial centres etc.

You can easily reach Puerto del Rosario by car, and if you are not hiring a car then from all the main towns on the island there is a regular bus service.
Many tourists come from the nearby popular tourist resort of Caleta de Fuste to do some shopping and visit the interesting historical statues and museums that you will find in the Capital of Fuerteventura - Puerto del Rosario!
Although as an Island Fuerteventura does not contain the usual water parks, zoo's and theme parks as lot of of other holiday destinations do, but it as an immense amount of beautiful land and surrounding ocean, with a national park in the South and lots of history throughout for you to explore!
