The Canary Islands and Spain are famous for there festivals (fiestas) and Carnivals and Tenerife is no exception!! Throughout the year Tenerife has many fiestas and carnivals, There are many close to Puerto de la Cruz and one, the San Andres festival, is held here in Novemeber! So if you want to join in the festivities then Puerto de la Cruz is the place to come!!!
Main Festivals
During February the carnivals are celebrated, carnivals are no doubt he most celebrated throughout Tenerife in all districts but more so in the capital of the island Santa Cruz! They are too many people considered the best throughout the world after the ones in Rio de Janeiro! There is not many of the islanders that do not join in the annual festivities of the carnival's! With their spectacular fancy dress costumes full of colour to show off over the 27 days that it is held!
The main celebrations take place in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in and around the areas of the port. If you go there through the month of February you should definitely not miss out on this fantastic event and for those of you that are a little more daring...why not join in and dress up yourself?! You will be able to dance to the amazing salsa music, or watch the events such as the carnival queen being elected and the competition of the street bands! I have been too many carnivals and would definitely recommend them!
The Corpus Christi Festival is held in June, this is where carpets of volcanic earth and flowers are laid out in La Orotava and La Laguna!
Over the 14th and 15th of August the Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria festival is held in Candelaria. This is where the islanders celebrate the patron saint of the island.
In Icod, La Oratava and Puerto de la Cruz over the 29th and 30th of November the San Andres festival takes place where you can try the New wine, as this is the New wine tasting festival!!
The more cultural festivals are; In June the music festival of the Canary Islands this is definitely one of the more prestigious classical music festivals with some great performers and orchestras taking part! In October, November and December is Opera Season and In September is the Sabandeno Festival, this is a folklore music festival where In La Laguna, Canary and foreign groups take part in the celebration and festivities of Christ.
