The old resort of Puerto de la Cruz is in the north of Tenerife, it lies at the mouth of Orotava Valley, and is dominated by the views of Mount Tiede. It is significantly cooler here than in the Southern resorts of the island. It has an old fishing port there which is one of Spain's major attractions. Although remarkably it remains unscathed. With its traditional Canarian style homes and fisherman landing their catches it really is charming and quaint.
Nightlife in Puerto de la Cruz is not as lively as the southern resorts, although here you will find bars and restaurant, shops and even a casino! There are many bars and restaurants to keep you entertained! The restaurants based near the seafront and port are ideal for people watching and relaxing!
During the day if you just fancy lying on a beach and relaxing with the children keeping amused, then the beach Playa de Jardin in Puerto de Cruz is good and child friendly! It is divided into three different stretches of beach, the one with the finest sand is Playa de Punta Brava, the others are Playa del Vastillo and Playa del Charcon. All of these beaches have changing rooms, showers and toilets, sunbeds, restaurant and bars, beach services and water sports!!
If you fancy something more energetic then there are places to visit and excursion that are close to and run from the resort, like; fishing excursions, Jeep safaris, Mount Tiede Tours, Zoos, Gardens, Golf Clubs and go-karting near by or if you fancy island hopping for the day the port nearby in Santa Cruz will take you to the nearby island of Gomera or even Gran Canaria in less than an hour! So you will never be stuck for anything to do!
Hiring a car is a good way get to the many different tourist attractions of Tenerife or just to go for the day exploring the island! There are buses that take you to the other main resorts if you cannot drive or do not want to hire a car!
