Reus The city of Reus is one of the most prosperous in the Catalan territory, & has been this way for hundreds of years. In the 18th century (together with London & Paris it was) pivotal in the Brandy trade. The 19th century saw its economy booming due to the manufacture of textiles, & 20th century growth as a result of the tourist trade & the birth of its international airport. One point worth mentioning is that Reus is the birth town of Antoni Gaudi. The odd thing is that although he is Catalonia's (if not Spain's) most celebrated architect not a single example of his work is present. Instead much of the city's 19th century modernist architecture can be attributed to Domenech i Montaner. Today Reus has a population of over 100,000 people. It is a living working city rather than a resort town, with people commuting there for work & other commercial activities. Of course a good percentage of the city's income comes form its airport, which in recent years has established budget airline routes & doubled passenger numbers. One symptom of Reus' prolonged success is that it is rich with examples of modernist architecture, a well developed infrastructure, & a real sense of civic pride. The climate in Reus is welcoming for the majority of the year; highs reach 28°C during the hottest months, & average temperatures are at 7-10°C during the winter. However visitors should be aware that temperatures are on average 2-4°C cooler if venturing farther inland.
