Roses Roses is the oldest town in Catalonia dating back almost 3,000 years; though it was originally known as Rhode, named after the Greek mariners from Rhodes that founded it. The town's long history has ensured a rich heritage remains present alongside the more modern pre-occupations of the tourist trade. Roses' continued popularity has a lot to do with it's many kilometres of pristine coastline & blue flag sandy beaches, flanked by countryside of outstanding beauty. One of the most unique features in Roses is it's Ciutadella (or citadel), which was officially declared a historical-artistic site in 1961. This fortification with it's monumental sea gate was commissioned by Charles V as a bastion against the Turks. It was built in 1543 in Renaissance style, & measures approximately 131,000 m². The Ciutadella stood up defensively against a number of attacks, mainly during the Napoleonic wars, before being partly blown up by Suchet (for the French) in 1814. It's interior consitutes a mixture of archealogical treasures; from the remains of the ancient Greek town of Rhode, to the later Hellenistic district, the Roman settlement, the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria, & many 19th century gems. A museum (the Museo de la Ciutadella) details it's history & can be found within the walls of the Ciutadella itself. Aside from the many historic treasures in & around Roses there is plenty to entertain those keen on a more relaxing holiday. It's seafront is made up of a string of well serviced golden sandy beaches, & the town's central streets are packed with restaurants, cafes, & bars; some of them of an exceptionally high quality. Roses has a resident population of around 15,000 with this number jumping to around 90,000 during the summer months. In recent times residential tourism has contributed significantly to this figure, with many foreign residents buying up property in the Roses area. Although (unlike neigbouring Lloret de Mar) Roses was not heavily developed for tourism in the 1950's, it still boasts an excellent selection of hotels & other accommodation options from which to choose. Roses also has great sports facilities, with almost all types catered for in the town & a good selection of golf courses outside of it. The varied countryside surrounding Roses is favoured amongst those who travel to the area to participate in adventure sports, from hiking & mountain biking to rock climbing & skiing. Although Roses has seen great changes since it's humble beginnings, the identity & traditions of the people that live here remain very much alive, & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout the town calendar. The cuisine is another major bonus, with affordable good food everywhere, alongside the middle to high end restaurants. Plenty of shopping opportunities also exist; ranging from souvenir shops selling local goods & handicrafts to designer label fashion outlets. A weekly municipal market is held every Tuesday on Carrer dels Mestres & the side streets around the sports centre. The climate in Roses is in the main welcoming all year round. With average highs of 29°C (82°F) in the summer months & 13°C (55°F) in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However be aware during the winter season low temperatures can be a good deal cooler than in Spain's southern regions.
