Roses Tourist / Tourism Roses is the oldest town in Catalonia dating back almost 3,000 years; though it was originally known as Rhode, named after the Greek mariners from Rhodes that founded it. Today visitors will find the town to be a captivating blend of antiquity & modern enterprise, offering historic sights & other heritage alongside the facilities & conveniences normally associated with a popular tourist destination. No trip to Roses would be complete without visiting it's Ciutadella (or citadel), which was officially declared a historical-artistic site in 1961. This fortification with it's monumental sea gate was commissioned by Charles V as a bastion against the Turks. It was built in 1543 in Renaissance style, & measures approximately 131,000 m². The Ciutadella stood up defensively against a number of attacks, mainly during the Napoleonic wars, before being partly blown up by Suchet (for the French) in 1814. It's interior constitutes a mix of archeological treasures; from the remains of the ancient Greek town of Rhode, to the later Hellenistic district, the Roman settlement, the Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria, & many 19th century gems. A museum (the Museo de la Ciutadella) details it's history & can be found within the walls of the Ciutadella itself. Aside from it's many historic treasures Roses offers plenty to entertain those keen on a more relaxing holiday. It's seafront is made up of a string of well serviced golden sandy beaches, & central streets are packed with restaurants, cafes, & bars; some of them of an exceptionally high quality. Roses has a resident population of around 15,000 with this number jumping to around 90,000 during the summer months. In recent times residential tourism has contributed significantly to this figure, with many foreign residents buying up property in the Roses area. Although (unlike nearby Lloret de Mar) Roses was not heavily developed for tourism in the 1950's, it does still boast an excellent selection of hotels & other accommodation options from which to choose. Roses also has great sports facilities, with almost all types catered for in the town & a good selection of golf courses outside of it. The varied countryside surrounding Roses is favoured amongst those who travel to the area to participate in adventure sports, from hiking & mountain biking to rock climbing & skiing.
