Salamanca's Cathedrals The city of Salamanca has no less that two Cathedrals to it's name. Known as the Old Cathedral and the New Cathedral they are actually joined and together form a huge and impressive structure, towering over the surrounding buildings and clearly visible when approaching of the city from the direction of the Roman bridge. The Old Cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries in Romanesque style. It's most striking feature is to be found inside the building, and comes in the form of a magnificent altarpiece. It comprises 53 hand painted panels depicting events in the story of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Each panel is framed by elaborate goldwork in the style of arched windows. The altarpiece is five tiers high, with the first and second tiers boasting a gold statue of the Virgen de los Viejos (the patron saint of Seville) as a centre-piece. The altar is crowned by a painting of the last judgement by Nicholas Fiorentino set in a semi-dome. Today the Cathedral's only access point is via the New Cathedral; to which it is joined. Salamanca's New Cathedral is not really all that new. It dates from the early 16th century and was constructed (at least in part) to hold up the older existing Cathedral, which was then deteriorating and in danger of falling down. It is built in late Gothic style, with multiple entrance points and elaborate stone carvings inside and out. Amusingly a stone carving has been added to the buildings exterior in recent times which depicts an astronaut. Other notable features include it's impressive plateresc organ, and detailed dome. It is also the only point of entry to the Old Cathedral of Salamanca.
