Salamanca's Old Cathedral The Old Cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries in Romanesque style. It's most striking feature is to be found inside the building, and comes in the form of a magnificent altarpiece. It comprises 53 hand painted panels depicting events in the story of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Each panel is framed by elaborate goldwork in the style of arched windows. The altarpiece is five tiers high, with the first and second tiers boasting a gold statue of the Virgen de los Viejos (the patron saint of Seville) as a centre-piece. The altar is crowned by a painting of the last judgement by Nicholas Fiorentino set in a semi-dome. Today the Cathedral's only access point is via the New Cathedral; to which it is joined for reasons of support. Salamanca Tourist Office TEL +34 923 268571 FAX +34 923 262492
