Salobrena Tourist / Tourism Tourism in Salobrena revolves mainly around the influx of Spanish nationals to the town during the summer months. Although tourists from other European nations have long visited, their presence is still relatively minimal in comparison with other resorts in Andalucia. Salobrena is most noted for its whitewashed old town, which can be found towards the highest point of the hill. It is both charming & well preserved, with flower filled winding streets & monuments of antiquity; such as its 10th century Moorish castle. The more modern residential zones spread down the slope towards the beach area, which is home to a multitude of restaurants & bars. This is the best place for visitors to enjoy the local cuisine; & take note it is customary in this part of Spain to receive a small plate of Tapas with every drink. To the west of Salobrena are many sugar cane plantations, which stretch across to Europe's last sugar factory in Caleta. For those looking to venture farther afield there is the city of Granada with its ancient Moorish origins (including the infamous Alhambra citadel) & the Sierra Nevada; Spain's southernmost ski resort & the location for several beautiful national parks. In recent years Salobrena has expanded its resident international community, though not nearly as much as towns in other parts of Andalucia. The fact that it is still mainly visited by Spanish nationals has had some bearing on this. As such the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive, & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout the town calendar.
