Salvador Dali Castle Museum The Salvador Dali Castle Museum is situated in the medieval castle of Pubol, & was a residence of the artists wife Gala. The three storey structure is most likely to have been constructed in the 14th century during the period of affluence experienced by the Pubol barony. It is a striking building with French style gardens that dominates the surrounding countryside. Dali bought the castle on the 1st of June 1970 to fulfill a promise to Gala (made in the 1930's) that he would buy her a palace. It was to be her residence exclusively which, by his own admission, he may only visit if invited. When purchased the castle was in need of extensive restoration. As may be expected of Dali this was done in a unique way, with the structural imperfections of the ruined property used to create unusual & often open spaces. The gardens were also restored & decorated with many sculptures, busts, & paintings. The most famous of which are likely to be the sculptures of long legged elephants. Much of the castle remains as is was when the Dali's lived there, with many articles of clothes, furniture, ornaments, stuffed animals, & art work present. The castle was the place where Gala was buried when she died. Dali moved into the residence for a period shortly after her death, but after a fire in which he was hospitalised moved to Figueras. The castle was officially opened as a museum in 1996.
