Sant Ferran Castle The castle of Sant Ferran in the town of Figueres is a first class tourist attraction. Built around the middle of the 18th century this vast complex covering 32 hectares of land was the largest ramparted fortification of its day. It garrisoned 6,000 men, though able to handle double that number if needed. At the time of its contruction 18th century Spain had lost much of it's world power & was instead focused on retaining territories at home. At the same time the threat from France was mounting & so the castle was constructed to hold off any army invading from across the Pyrenees. The reason for its location at Figueres was that it was the first sizeable town an army would come across. Though it was in its day an impressive fortification equipped to defend itself against almost any opponent, on three separate occasions it surrendered without offering resistance to the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte. This has led (in recent times) for the campaigning that the castle at Sant Ferran be turned into a monument for peace. More than just a military installation Santa Ferran castle has been declared a historic-artistic monument, largely due to the architectural quality present throughout much of the site.
