Plaza Sant Jaume Plaza Sant Jaume (St. James' Square) has been an important part of Barcelona since Roman times. It was originally the crossroads for important streets which crossed the city from North to South & East to West, & today is still a nucleus for Barcelona. Important government buildings were to be found here then, as they are today. On one side of the square is the Palace of the Generalitat (which houses the government of the autonomous community of Catalonia), & on the other side the Ajuntament (city hall). The presence of these representative offices have ensured the square witness some of the most important events in Catalan history; speeches, demonstrations, & political gatherings. However it is also a site where the city receives its heroes; whether they be from the sporting world, musicians, or other. Traditional fiestas also tend to gravitate to this area, & on Sunday mornings locals gather to dance the Sardana (a traditional Catalan dance). This attractive square took its present form in 1840.
