Santander Fiestas As a city of great standing and tradition Santander's fiestas are among the best in Spain. There are many fiestas throughout its calendar, some larger than others. Below we list some of the most popular events.
On the 16th of July local sailors honor their patroness the Virgen del Carmen. The event takes place around the port area. Typically an effigy of the patroness is paraded through the city streets and then out at sea aboard a flower laden boat, trailed by a flotilla of fishing boats. The evening culminates with celebrations as well as customary fireworks. The Santander International Festival is the city's largest annual event lasting the entire month of August. During this time the classical and musical arts are celebrated in a big way, using many public venues though centering around the impressive Palacio de Festivales (Festival Palace Concert Hall). Many classical, jazz, traditional, and popular music concerts are put on alongside opera, dance, and other events. This fiesta has both a national and international following.
