Seville Cathedral Seville's most visited attraction is it's magnificent Cathedral. An imposing structure it is the 3rd largest Cathedral in the world (behind St. Peters in Rome & St. Paul's in England). In the modern world to be the third largest Cathedral may for some not be such an achievement, but it is worth noting that this building was the biggest monument to Christianity for many hundreds of years. It remains the world's largest Gothic building, and at the time of its construction it's Giralda belltower was also the tallest building in the world. It is an incredibly detailed building inside & out, offering some beautifully sculpted facades; especially that of it's main entrance which is truly magnificent. The Giralda belltower is today the symbolic postcard snapshot for Seville. It is reachable via a stone staircase and offers one of the best views out across the city; definitely worth visiting for the photo opportunity alone. The Cathedral's interior is also breathtaking. High vaulted ceilings and archways dominate, with an enormous altarpiece surrounded by gold-work at one end. The organ is also worth noting due to it's elaborate detail and sheer size, as it takes up a huge central portion of the building. The tomb of Christopher Columbus can also be found here, though some dispute the authenticity of it's contents. A part of the Cathedral's interior has is now used as a museum displaying some of the cities finest works of art. It's collection includes paintings by artists such as Goya, Murillo, Luis de Vargas, alongside many others. Seville Tourist Office TEL +34 954 592915 FAX +34 954 590919
