Sierra Nevada Ski Resort The Sierra Nevada is well known for its ski resort; officially called Sol y Nieve (which translates to sun & snow). With pistes for all levels of skiers the resort is a popular destination during the winter months. Its commercial centre also offers visitors a good range of affordable dining options & retail outlets. The capacity at Sol y Nieve has recently been increased by the addition of more chair-lifts. The number now stands at 31,965 people per hour using its 2 gondolas, 12 chair-lifts, & 5 ski-lifts. The lifts are in operation from 9am - 4.30pm unless weather conditions dictate otherwise. There are over 61 kilometres of slope at Sol y Nieve spread across 39 runs. These runs are enough to provide a challenge for intermediate skiers/snowboarders of all ages. However those more experienced might prefer to try out one of the 6 sensational off-course trails present on the resort. The resorts most recent claim to fame came from hosting events for the 1996 World Alpine Ski Championships; with the courses used having been opened up to the public in recent years. Aside from its varied dining options, vibrant nightlife, & of course the slopes themselves, the Sol y Nieve ski resort offers its visitors a wealth of additional facilities & attractions. These include; a snowpark for snowboarders, an acro-park for artistic style skiing & snowboarding, snowmobile excursions, dog sleighs, & inflatable toboggans. Many of the above services are undertaken in activity areas away from the main slopes. For those looking for ski/snowboarding lessons there are a wide variety of instructors to choose from. Instructors can be sourced through the resort or privately. Parking at the resort is easy with numerous options on lower & upper levels. A shuttle service is in operation from each of the car parks to the resort centre.
