Sitges Tourist / Tourism Sitges has been a trendy place for Spanish people to visit for many years. This has much to do with its popularity amongst modernist & surrealist artists such as Santiago Rusinol & Pablo Picasso. Traditionally many of Barcelona's most affluent crowd built holiday homes in the town, which over time brought much positive cultural input. This worked its way into the town's architecture, its artistic offerings, bohemian feel, & above all influenced the resident population with an influx of liberal ideas. During the 1960's Spain was under constant pressure (under the Franco dictatorship) to confirm to conservative ideals. At the same time Sitges began to be seen as a place to escape this, drawing visitors from all over Spain & earning it an international reputation. Today Sitges is both a weekend break & a summer holiday tourist destination. The peak summer months of July & August are its busiest period; mainly attracting families & the usual holiday crowd. But what really distinguishes Sitges from other towns on the Costa is its popularity amongst the international gay community. This niche form of tourism developed naturally as a result of the inherently welcoming & liberal attitude of the town. As a result there are a multitude of gay friendly/orientated businesses present, from hotels & alternative accommodation types, to shops, bars, clubs, restaurants, saunas, cruises, & much more.
