Tarragona Located in the province of Catalonia in the North-East of Spain, the city of Tarragona has been declared a world heritage city. This is largely due to its past role as capital of the largest Iberian province under Roman rule; boasting an array of well preserved buildings & other structures. At the same time it is a smart city with a modern infrastructure, & of course looks out across the Mediterranean with a beautiful sandy coastline. Modern Tarragona has an immediate populace of over 120,000 (as of the 2003 census), with many more living in extended suburbs & satellite towns. It is the capital of the a province of the same name. As Spain's second most important port it is also a hive of commercial activity. Tarragona is a popular weekend break destination for many Europeans, & is frequented by day-trippers spending their holidays in the Costa's other resorts. It is however also a good place to stay for longer holidays due to the variety of sights, accommodation, beaches, & other leisure pursuits. Tarragona has an abundance of retail outlets, markets, & department stores in its centre. Cuisine is another bonus, with many affordable (& good quality) cafes & restaurants peppering the city. The climate in Tarragona is welcoming for the majority of the year; highs reach 28°C during the hottest months, & average temperatures are at 7-10°C during the winter. However visitors should be aware that temperatures are on average 2-4°C cooler if venturing farther inland.
