Tarragona Fiestas Spanish towns & cities are famous for their festivals or fiestas & Tarragona is no exception. There are plenty of fiestas throughout the town calendar, see below for some of the more popular events:-   A very popular event is the Fiesta de San Juan (feast of St. John) on the 23rd of June. The fiesta originates from pagan tradition, though given Christian sanction, & is essentially a celebration of the midsummer solstice. Bonfires are erected on the beach, accompanied by much music, singing, & dancing. Drink flows & food is widely available. Events culminate with raucous fireworks, though in reality (as the 24th is a public holiday) the party goes on pretty much all night. The festival of Sant Magi celebrates Tarragona's lesser patron saint & takes place on the 19th of August. There is a waterfront parade, events including human towers, & much music & dancing. September 11th celebrates Catalan National Day. This fiesta commemorates the Catalan defeat at the hands of the Spanish army of Castile in 1714. From this day on Catalan rights & laws were abolished, & the fiesta is seen as a re-vindication of this event.   Precise dates cannot be guaranteed for many listed festivities due to the ever changing fiesta calendar.
