Los Rodeos Airport had only been used for domestic flights between the Canary islands up until October 2003 when BMI and British Airways starting flying there again. The Sur Reina Aiport was inaugurated by Queen Sofia on 6 November 1978, by the end of its first year there was 1 million passengers that had passed through its doors. In 2003 it handled, 8,850,613 passengers, 62,493 flight operations and 8,775 tons of cargo. As a result the airport boasts operations by more than 150 airlines. Sur Reina Sofia Airport is easily accessible for disabled people, All areas of the airport have been equipped to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility. There are plenty of disabled car parking spaces close to the terminal. Throughout the airport terminal building there are special telephones, toilets, flight information and boarding modules. The departures in Sur Reina Sofia Airport are on the ground floor of the passenger building. Reaching it is easy, it is direct from the taxi rank, bus stop or the various airport car parks. The departures lobby has an area of 10,800 square metres and can comfortably handle the three thousand passengers that the airport can get in the rush hour of peak season. There are 87 check-in desks for passenger use. The Arrivals lounge at Sur Reina Sofia Airport is lovely and spacious, when you land at the airport you will either find yourself going through a tunnel that is directly connected to the terminal or being shuttled from the plane on a bus to the terminal. Its has the capacity of comfortably holds 2,700 passengers in rush hour, based on the ground floor.
