Tenerife's Mount Tiede is Spain's highest Summit. The Worlds third largest Volcano that last erupted in 1909. At 3717.91 metres (12198 ft) forms the highest peak in Spanish Territory. There are two calderas that are Tiede national parks, but the access to the summit is very strictly controlled.
The magnificent snow capped mountain and divides the island, and is only 90 minutes from the beach!! When visiting Mount Tiede take with you a wind jacket, obviously being so high up it can get a bit chilly and very windy!! Also in case of rain!!! Sometimes on the guided tours of Tiede they will make a barbeque over the steam that leak out from the plumes!
If your not scared of heights you can get a hot-air balloon trip that takes you high in the sky and gives you a spectacular view of Mount Tiede, and the rest of the Island, This is available from Playa de Las Americas. If that not for you then by car or quad bikes may be more so!!!
If you do not have a permit, which is free, walkers are only allowed as far as the two viewpoints, the Miradors, with their connecting pass that will take you to the base of the final summit of the cable cars (teleferico) also. It is essential that this restriction is in place as the 2.5 million visitors a year to the National Park could cause potential erosion and disturbance using the cable cars to the summit. All precautions are taken for the National to protect the natural environment of the park, for example the once used 4x4 tracks in the park are now closed to public. It is also rumoured that once the operating license of the cable cars expires that that will be closed too.
