| Tenerife's Black Pyramids Tenerife has its own pyramids -its official!! Based in the South of Tenerife, Guimar. They are certainly worth a look - and a great day out!! There are two theories on how they come about, one is that they just a pile of stones moved away by local farmers and have built in over time to vaguely represent pyramids - this is the most favoured by killjoys!! The other which is most favoured is that they are step pyramids similar to those found in Peru and Mexico!!! Due to the similarity of the pyramids in Güímar to those in Sicily, Mexico, Mesopotamia, Polinesia and Peru induced Thor Heyerdahl to come to Tenerife to study the structures at the site itself. Thor Heyerdahl, the world famous explorer and author, started the setting up a Pyramid Park and research centre investigating into these unusually strange formations and it became a personal commitment to him when Fred. Olsen shipping company purchased the site in order to protect the structures and create what is today the Pirámides de Güímar Ethnographic Park. Once you have visited them, you can decide for yourself! I know I prefer the second theory as do most, that they are some form of ancient civilisation! The park opened to the public in April 1998, at the park you will find two exhibiton centre's, a museum, Easter Island photographic exhibition, garden's, Cueva Chacona an eight metre long cave thought to have dated from a period between 680 and 1020 AD, a playground for the children and a shop that has plenty of souveniers for you to choose from. There also is an Auditorium which the park makes available for use of hire for meetings, presentations and other use's including summer concerts during the evenings! Thor Hyerdahl died in April 2002, during his amazing life he recieved honours for the King's and Presidents of Norway, Italy, Peru, Egypt, and Morocco. Britain's, Queen Elizabeth II decorated him with the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society and the King of Sweden with that of the Royal Society of Anthropology and Geography of Sweden. In 1961 he was given an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Oslo. His documentaries brought him an Oscar and an Oscar nomination. He wrote a significant number of books, one of which is titled The Kon-Tiki Expedition and is the bestselling book of all time after the Bible, holding the world record for translations, with 67 different languages!! Plus many, many more honours, awards for his magnificent work during his career and 88 years of life. The Pirámides de Güímar Ethnographic Park, is a fantastic day out for all! A must-see attraction in Tenerife!
