Toledo Alcazar Toledo's Alcazar dates back to the times of Roman domination in the region, though little remains to remind us of this due to the re-building of the structure on numerous occasions throughout it's history. Yet this in itself tells a story, as the Alcazar of Toledo has always been a fortification of tremendous importance. Later civilizations such as the Visigoths and the Moors built large defensive structures here; in fact the very name Alcazar originates from the time of Arab occupation. However it was not until the reconquest of Toledo by Christian armies that the structure began to take some semblance of it's current shape. Under Alfonso VI and Alfonso X the building was rebuilt; the first in Spain to take a square plan with large towers on it's corners. Subsequent rulers of Spain took residence and added to and improved the Alcazar, though its overall shape remained similar. The result is something quite unique, with each of it's facades showing architectural styles from different ages. Though the Alcazar should not really be thought of as a palace, as it has been the site of many great battles throughout Spain's history. It's current incarnation pays homage to this, as though still used as offices for the army it is now the site of Toledo's Military Museum. A municipal library also has use of a smaller part of the building. Toledo Tourist Office TEL +34 925 220843 FAX +34 925 252648
