Toledo Cathedral Toledo's Cathedral is of tremendous national importance, being the primate Cathedral of Spain, and therefore the centre of the nation's Catholic church. The site on which it is built, though once occupied by a Mosque built during the years of Moorish occupation, is symbolic as it was also the site of a 6th century church established by the Visigoths (who originally established Toledo as the main site for Christian worship on the peninsular). Built between the 13th and 15th centuries the Cathedral of Toledo is one of Spain's most impressive religious constructs. It is Gothic in style with Mudejar touches, giving the building a different appearance from other buildings of the time. The Cathedral's interior is equally impressive with a large number of chapels, and elaborate detail throughout. Worthy of note are the altarpiece, and the many sculptures made of gilded wood. Additionally part of the Cathedral's interior is given over to a museum housing works by artists such as Raphael, El Greco, Titian, Can Dyck, and more. It is also the sit for the display of the Monstrace; an impressive 16th century gold and silver work of art used during Toledo's Corpus Christi celebrations.
