Indeed it was always a strategically important city highly valued by the Moors, capital of Spain under the Visigoths, and once home to the royal court of Christian Spain. Another major role of Toledo is that it is the traditional centre for Catholic religion in Spain. It is also historically well known for it's religious tolerance, and boasted large Jewish and Muslim communities during the middle ages.
