Tossa de Mar

The coastal town of Tossa de Mar is one of the best known spots on the Costa Brava, & it is certainly one of the most popular. Tourism took over as the major contributor to the town economy in the 1950's, where previously it had relied on agriculture, & to a lesser extent the fishing trade for it's fortune. At this time the shooting of a Hollywood classic (Pandora & the Flying Dutchman starring Ava Gardner & James Mason) helped promote the town, & significant investment by Spain's government funded the construction of hotels & apartment complexes, wide stretches of coastline to be adapted, & the improvement of municipal facilities. This paid off & the tourist trade now swells the town population ten-fold during the summer months.

Like other town's on the Costa Brava one of the main reasons behind Tossa de Mar's original attraction lay in the beauty of the countryside surrounding it. This varied terrain is ideal for farming, while at the same time favoured amongst those who travel to the area to participate in adventure sports, from hiking & mountain biking to rock climbing & skiing. Its coastline is equally sought after, with many long sandy beaches split only by rocky coves.

Aside from the hotels, apartment complexes, swathes of restaurants, & many bars, the town of Tossa de Mar offers a lot to discover; after all it's history dates back as far as 966AD. A good example of this heritage comes in the form of its ancient lighthouse, which was built around the 13th century & is still functional.

In recent years Tossa de Mar has expanded its resident international community, with a steady influx of ex-pats arriving from other European countries. However the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout its calendar (some of which are a real spectacle & well worth a look). The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside middle to high end restaurants. Shopping opportunities also exist; ranging from souvenir shops selling local goods & handicrafts to designer label fashion outlets.

The climate in Tossa de Mar is in the main welcoming all year round. With average highs of 29°C (82°F) in the summer months & 13°C (55°F) in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However be aware during the winter season low temperatures can be a good deal cooler than in Spain's southern regions.
