Valencia Fiestas Spanish towns and cities are famous for their fiestas and some of those held in Valencia are very well known. Many  fiestas (especially the larger ones) correspond to particular periods of city history. The best advice we can give for those planning their holiday at fiesta time is to contact the relevant tourist office.   The city of Valencia's most famous fiesta is the Las Fallas celebration which takes place in mid March (typically 12th-19th). Las Fallas started out to celebrate the feast day of St. John but over the years became a five day long extravaganza attracting well over 2,000,000 people to the city for the event. A major part of the fiesta are the incredibly impressive (and often huge) figurines depicting satirical scenes of everyday life erected at 350 parks and key parts of the city. There are also a wide range of other attractions including parades, paella cooking competitions, bullfights, beauty pageants, concerts, and lots of fireworks. The last day of the Las Fallas fiesta sees the ritual burning of the figurines together with huge firework displays and intense celebration. This is not a festival for the faint hearted, it is loud, long, and lots of fun. Another well known fiesta is La Tomatina, held around the last week of August. Although not in Valencia itself the village of Bunol where it is held is easily commutable. On the day of the fiesta between 11am-1pm around 30,000 revellers hurl some 240,000 pounds of over ripe tomatoes at each other. Once the fight is over the best place for people to head is usually the river to wash off.
