Vilaflor is the highest parish - it is 4593ft above sea level - a handicraft centre and once spa town in Tenerife, situated high up in the mountain above the south of the island.
It has amazing views from the base of the grand forest of Canarian pines that all but encircles the Parque Nacional del Teide, pure upland air and local springs, it's easy to see how the town's once was a veritable sanatorium for those suffering from lung complaints because of its great altitude and its pure air.
With characteristic old brick-and-tile houses, winding streets and in its uppermost part the San Pedro church, where you can see an image of the saint Peter, attributed to Pedro de Mena, and the richly carved altars, there is also a number of craft shops which are particularly good for gifts such as woodcarvings and lace - with all this it really is a charming town. Though a little short on facilities today, the town is still a tranquil and practical upland base which hikers use for exploring local pine forests - where you will find the most renowned specimens there are those called ‘pinos gordos’, which means thick pines, one of which has a trunk 8m in circumference and is 60m high!! The national park is also close by! - all this at less than an hour's drive from the glut of facilities on the coast.
This is all less than an hour's drive to tourist hub of the South of Tenerife where you will find all kinds of facilities and a variety of things to do - the kind of things you would normally find on the coast of a popular holiday resort! Including; the beaches, nightlife and theme and amusement parks....
There are several beaches in the south, including small and secluded or long stretches of white fine sand!! Most are child friendly, with water sports, ringo's paragliding and banana boats, along the shore and bars and restaurant along the edge of the sand!
There are plenty of Tourist attraction's that are too far from Vilaflor, In the south you will find the Aqua Park in Calle Finlandia, it is open all year round and costs; €20 this is a brilliant and fun day out with lots to do including an amazing dolphin show that knocks the spots off some in bigger more well known parks!! Also you will find other waterparks and amusement parks near by too! There is plenty to do if your not relaxing on the beach or at your pool nursing your head from the night before!! The other one on the island isn't far either! There are also Zoos, Gardens, Golf clubs, Whale watching and Dolphin watching, go-karting, fishing and lost of water sports! So you will never be stuck for anything to do!
Also there is an essential part of Tenerife's history in Adeje which isn't far from the village too, this presents an important archaeological and architectural area and of particular note are the funeral caves that are linked to Tenerife's original inhabitants, the Guanches. Set in shelves along the Precipice of Hell, these motley reminders of an ancient civilisation are fast becoming a major tourist attraction too.
There are a few Apartments and villas that available to rent for your holiday, although most are little town characteristic houses in Vilaflor, whether you want are looking for a basic property somewhere just to lay your head a night or luxurious with an abundance of facilities! Properties range in size and shape, from studio's or one bedroom apartments, if there are just the two of you to three bedroom - normally sleeping up 8 if your taking the family or going in a big group, or one bedroom villas and bungalows up to 6 bedroom villas on the outskirts of the village!
There are Companies that rent these properties out, but also there is private rentals, where people that have bought the property for holiday homes and when they are not there using it they will rent it out for your exclusive use! Some of these properties can be set in privately owned complexes, where locals live! Most come with communal swimming pools too, and these are normally quieter due to the fact it isn't full of holiday makers and is more residencial. A word of warning though these are quieter and normally better for families or older groups than the young tourists!!!
