Barcelona is great place to visit for a holiday, or as a weekend break destination. Firstly it is located just 12 kilometres away from Barcelona Airport. Barcelona Airport (BCN) is Spain's second ranked airport in terms of passenger traffic & amongst the ten busiest in Europe; see Barcelona Flights for more information/to search for flights. Those intending on visiting other parts of Spain & the south of France will find Barcelona an ideal base; both from an accessibility point of view & because of the wide choice of accommodation on offer. Opportunities for car hire are also good; see the Barcelona Car Hire document for more information.
Barcelona is a modern, artistic, chic, & vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage. As the capital of Catalonia (Spain's most prosperous region) it was once the centre of an empire, & its past dates back thousands of years. More recently it played host to the 1992 Olympic games, which led to the transformation of its once shabby waterfront, regeneration of run down zones, & added new flavour to evening entertainment & retail options. It is difficult to know where to begin when summarising Barcelona's sights & attractions; though its most popular is the Sagrada Familia church by Gaudi. See Barcelona Attractions on the left hand side of this page for more detailed information on things to see & do.
As mentioned above one of Barcelona's big draws is its accommodation. It offers perhaps the best choice of accommodation of any Spanish city, with options catering from high-end to budget travel requirements. To search for hotels see Barcelona Hotels; to search for rental accommodation see Barcelona Rentals.
The chic & stylish nature of this city is reflected in its shops; & there are enough high end retail outlets to keep those interested for weeks. Alongside this are an abundance of high street offerings, markets, & department stores.
Barcelona boasts an excellent & varied seafront. However this was not always the case; the once shabby waterfront was only transformed during preparations for the 1992 Olympics. It now consists of many kilometres of clean sandy Barcelona Beaches, promenades, marinas, & leisure facilities. Great effort has been made to maintain the cleanliness of both sand & sea; so much so that visitors to Barcelona will find it difficult to imagine it was ever any different.
When the sun goes down Barcelona really comes to life. A wealth of dining options, theatres, concerts, & live music venues pepper the city. In addition to the throng of bars & nightclubs that stay open into the early hours. More traditional fiestas (festivals) are still prevalent, & there are a wide number to choose from, see Barcelona Fiestas for more information.
Barcelona Weather is in the main welcoming all year round. With average highs of 29°C (82°F) in the summer months & 13°C (55°F) in the winter, it is possible to enjoy an outdoor life at any time of the year. However low temperatures are a good deal cooler here than in Spain's southern regions, & Barcelona experiences a lot more in the way of rainfall. The upside to this is evident in the green & fertile lands that surround the city, & many Barcelona Golf courses have benefited from this.
