Barcelona is a cosmopolitan, modern, artistic, & fashionable city with a rich cultural heritage. It is also a centre for industry in Spain, & a major Mediterranean port. As the capital of Catalonia (Spain's most prosperous region) it was once the centre of an empire, & its past dates back thousands of years. More recently it played host to the 1992 Olympic games, which led to enlargement, & improvements made to services & the appearance of many city zones.

The city has long been popular internationally with a high number of tourists visiting. A large quantity of these visitors came as a result of the cultural uniqueness of the city; for its architecture, art, museums, & other attractions. The 1992 Olympic games further compounded these aspects when televising events around the world, but it also brought attention to the cities chic, vibrant, & youthful nature. Barcelona's Olympics transformed its once shabby waterfront, regenerated run down zones, & added new flavour to evening entertainment options & retail outlets. This brought a new & more youthful crowd to appreciate what the city had to offer.

Today visitors will find a more cosmopolitan Barcelona; embracing its past heritage while promoting the new. It offers perhaps the best choice of accommodation of any Spanish city, with options catering from high-end to budget travel requirements. Many airlines (including budget airlines) fly here frequently from a host of European cities. For flights, hotels, car hire, & airport information/transfers see the relevant links on the left hand side of this page.
