Barcelona University (Universitat de Barcelona) was founded in 1450, though its current building was not inaugurated until 1871. It has played an important in the city for many hundreds of years, & still continues to do so. It is the largest university in Catalonia, educating over half of the regions student population. Its (approximate) 76,000 strong student population is also the second highest in Spain.
Based on current figures (2005) the university of Barcelona produces ten thousand bachelor degrees, & 450 Phd's per annum. It is also one of Europe's leading international universities, with increasing numbers of foreign students attending. Much effort is made to foster international relations & student exchange programs. Although a wide range of course are on offer here it is both Spanish language courses & the arts which attract the most international interest. The latter mainly due to the city's pedigree in producing original & highly acclaimed artists, sculptors, etc; & in the inspirational quality of the city itself, its many museums, & its galleries.
The university houses an extensive range of services. Its library for example is the second largest in Spain, with over 2,000,000 books, 36,000 journals, & 6,000 reading sites throughout the university campus.
The university's main site is located on the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, a prestigious street in central Barcelona. There are many other campus sites throughout Barcelona.
