Dali Theatre Museum
Museo Teatre Gala Salvador Dali, Catalonia, Spain
Dali Theatre Museum
Officially known as the Museo-Teatre Gala Salvador Dali this impressive structure was Dali's largest project & is located in the town of Figueras (Catalonia), Dali's birthplace. It was born from the romantic memory he had of the old town theatre as it was when he was a child. The theatre was the location where he held his first ever exhibition & had remained in ruins for decades after being bombed during the Spanish civil war. After talks with the town mayor he embarked on a project to rebuild it as a museum to house his own works, of which the old theatre was to be it's heart.
The museum opened it's doors in 1974 to much acclaim & is home to the worlds most comprehensive collection of works by the artist; many of which were donated by Salvador Dali himself. The paintings on show here are from all periods in the artists career; from his first sketches & artistic experiments, to his ventures into cubism, impressionism, surrealism, & more. In addition many of Dali's sculptures, murals, collages, furniture, jewellery collections, & design work can be found here.
Works from other artists collected by Dali are also housed at the Museo-Teatre, including a gallery devoted entirely to Dali's friend, the Catalan artist Antoni Pixtot. Pixtot also had a hand in helping with the design & construction of the Museo-Teatre & became it's director after Dali's death.
