Formentera Tourist Information

Formentera lies of the south east coast of mainland Spain in the Mediterranean ocean.  There are four Balearic Islands, Formentera is the smallest and the least overrun of the Balearics.  Its sister islands are Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza.

Formentera is 13 miles long, 35 miles squared, and is home to 5000 people.  Formentera does not have an airport, however there is a regular ferry service from the neighboring island of Ibiza.  From Ibiza airport take a taxi to the port (Puerto Formentera) this takes around 10 minutes.  Then catch the fast boat which departs every 2 hours from Ibiza arriving only 30 minutes later in Formentera island.  Formentera is so different from Ibiza it doesn't feel as though you have travelled to another island but another continent.

The main attraction to Formentera island is its tranquility the fact it is completely unspoilt.  Home to most of the best beaches within the Balearics with white fine sand, shallow crystal clear waters, with very good under water visibility (great for snorkeling and scuba diving).  There are around ten really great beaches, most have beach bars selling tapas, some with boats for hire either with or without a crew.  All are recommended for snorkeling, and scuba diving.  Most of the beaches in Formentera are tolerant of the nudists and predominantly the Illetes beach is a completely naked, nudist, au naturale beach.

There are many activities to do in Formentera including sailing, windsurfing, fishing, boating, cycling, walking, snorkeling, scuba diving, bird watching, painting and photography (countless Artists holiday in Formentera).  You can visit the sand dunes, caves, lakes, windmills, view points, light houses, and markets to name but a few.

Formentera island is a relatively flat island with windy dusty lanes, lined with fincas, and many breeds of trees including sabina, fig, palm, and pine trees.  Every so often you will come across a quaint Spanish fishing villages with numerous fine restaurants and a couple of bars.  The local cuisine is excellent the fresh fish brought in that afternoon from the fisherman is to die for, the sole, and sardines are particularly good.

The best time to visit Formentera is between May and October, high season is from June to September.
