Abadia del Sacromonte
Granada's Abadia del Sacromonte (Abbey of Sacromonte) can be found in the Sacromonte residential area on the outskirts of the city. The site was made famous due to the discovery of lead plates inscribed with the story of the martyrdom of St. Tesiphon, St. Cecilio, & St. Hiscius (early Christian martyrs). Ashes & other human remains were found later in an old Roman kiln & Sacromonte became a site for pilgrimage. Work on the Abbey's construction started at around the end of the 16th century, though was not completed until the beginning of the 20th century.
Much controversy has surrounded the finding of the lead plates at Sacromonte; there were 27 in total. Written in Arabic they alleged that St. Cecilio was in fact of Arab descent rather than Spanish. The plates were sent to Rome & were discredited by the Pope in 1682. Thankfully the plates were eventually returned to Granada.
Today the ashes of the martyred saints are kept below their statues in the church. Also on display is a cross said to have been carried by St. John when asking for alms. The Roman kiln in which the remains were found is placed behind an iron grille.
Every year on the 1st of February there is a celebration of the patron saint of Granada (St. Cecile) at the Abbey. A traditional religious mass starts the event, followed by music, dancing, & a large outdoor picnic.
