Giralda Belltower, Andalucia, Spain, Europe
At the time of its construction Seville's Giralda belltower was the tallest building in the world. It was originally built by the Moors as a minaret, for calling the masses to prayer, and as an observatory. So applauded was its design that the Giralda was used as a model for minarets at the Moorish capitals of Marrakesh and Rabat.
Today La Giralda is the symbolic postcard snapshot for Seville. It's function as an observatory continues, as it is reachable via a stone staircase and still offers one of the best views out across the city (definitely worth visiting for the photo opportunity alone).
