Welcome to Mallorca / Majorca Shopping
Mallorca / Majorca is famous for its shopping especially around Palma - the islands capital. In Palma you can find everything from your top designer shops to your normal fashion houses. With the atmosphere you get round the little squares and streets shopping in Mallorca couldn't be more fun and enjoyable. There is a very relaxed shopping atmosphere around Mallorca. In the resorts you will find a wide variety of shops from clothes shops, electrical goods, Jewellery shops and of course plenty of the usual tourist merchandise shops, plus more.
Most shops are open from around 10am to 1:30pm and 5pm to 8pm Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings. The exceptions are souvenir shops in the large resorts, which stay open every day, El Corte Ingles (leading department store in Spain), Pryca, and the Gigante chain of supermarkets, open throughout the day Monday to Saturday.
In Palma you will find everything from top designer shops to small boutiques to your general basic clothes, in the main shopping areas such as Avinguda Jaume III and the Passeig des Born which are perfect for up-market boutiques and the pedestrian streets around Placa Major for small specialist shops. There is also a modern shopping mall and hypermarket complex, the Centro Comercial Porto Pi, that is 2km from the centre. Palma has a great advantage for the shopper as it is relatively a small size. Avinguda Jaume III, as well as being the best-known street in the city, is also the newest. Only 30 years ago the street didn't exist and today it is one of Palma's most elegant avenues, which is hard to believe as it is lined with sophisticated shops offering men's and women's fashions as well as jewellery and gifts. Galerias Preciados, one of Spain's most popular department store chains, is also present. For a thorough shopping spree you shouldn't forget the side streets of Bonaire, Sta. Maria del Sepulcro, Sant Marty etc.
If you, like me like the markets for a good haggle and great bargain there are plenty across the island of Mallorca....Make sure you try to barter as it makes that bargain even more satisfying!!!
There is a flea market every Saturday morning in Palma at the start of the "Avenidas" (streets) and in Campos. Also on a Sunday morning in Binissalem, Consell, Inca and Alcudia.
The weekly market in Sineu, is worth a visit during your holiday, it's always worth a visit to one of the markets which are to be found in many of the islands villages. The most fascinating of these takes place every Wednesday in the small town of Sineu, close to Inca. The market has the usual stools selling fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products, and local produce such as a large choice of Mallorcan hand made arts, pottery, leather goods etc. Also it has the farming community offering all kinds of live animals. You can buy almost anything cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, hens, goats, ducks, or even a kitten to take home if you have the room! It's also particularly interesting to observe the locals bartering. The market in Sineu opens at 8:00 but get there early as it soon becomes very busy. After you have finished your shopping and sightseeing trip take a lunch in one of the excellent cellar restaurants or taverns around the market square, close to the church are lovely.
