Motril, Costa Tropical, Spain
Property & Tourist Information
Like other coastal towns in the region Motril is a popular tourist destination, though it is more than that, it is a working city with a busy commercial port. Motril first prospered as Granada's nearest port, & was further enriched at the height of the sugar trade in Spain, when many municipal buildings were added; beautifying the city. This ends an ambience to Motril not shared by many other coastal resorts.
Though growing more popular by the years among foreign tourists, Motril is still most visited by Spanish nationals during the summer season. With a resident population of over 50,000 people, it is the southern most town in the province of Granada, which in turn is in the autonomous region of Andalucia. It boasts a particularly picturesque seafront with many kilometres of sandy beaches. In this part of the country the mountains slope right down towards the coastline, creating a series of coves & a panoramic backdrop.
As the main commercial port for the Costa Tropical, Motril is better connected with other regions/prominent cities in Spain than its coastal neighbours. This makes it an ideal destination for exploring southern Spain. The N-323 will take visitors to Granada in just 45 minutes, & its relatives to Malaga in 1.5 hours, & Seville in 2.5 hours. The ski resort & national parks of the Sierra Nevada are an hours drive inland.
In recent years Motril has expanded its resident international community, though not nearly as much as resorts in other parts of Andalucia. The fact that it is still mainly visited by Spanish nationals has had some bearing on this. As such the identity & traditions of the people that live here are still very much alive, & many fiestas (festivals) take place throughout the year. The cuisine is another major bonus with affordable good food available everywhere, alongside the middle to high end restaurants.
As the province of Granada's southernmost resort the weather in Motril is welcoming for the vast majority of the year. It boasts average highs of 30°C (86°F) during the summer months & 15-20°C during the winter season. However it must be noted that temperatures drop significantly at altitude. Since much of the region is high above sea level, those visiting areas other than the coast should take this into consideration.
