Palau Guell (translating as Guell Palace) was commissioned by Eusebi Guell in 1885. It is located on the Carrer Nou de la Rambla in central Barcelona. At the time of construction this part of Barcelona was one of the least favourable zones, & very close to the city's most famous brothel. Guell wanted to change the areas reputation by building a structure of significance, & to this aim allowed Gaudi to use the best materials in its construction.
Palau Guell was one of Gaudi's first big undertakings & in it can be seen much of his early creative genius. It shows clear desire to combine the structural & decorative parts of architecture. Guided tours of the Guell urban palace are conducted every half an hour during the summer months.
