Seville City Walls

The walls that surrounded ancient Seville are best preserved where they run next to the Iglesia Macarena church. Large and imposing they once completely enclosed the city with no less than seventeen gates in use. They also connected with the Torre del Oro; the main defensive position along the Guadalquivir river. Though Seville was first walled under Roman rule it was under Almoravide (Moorish) occupation that they were fortified to their greatest extent.
